Hugo's Delight
This desert wine is a very new wine for us (first released in 2006), and has proven to be a delightfully successful venture. It is named for the owners' youngest son, Hugo, who has always had a penchant for desert wines.
Winemaking: Fruit from two clones of very ripe, and slightly botrytised, Riesling grapes were carefully selected, hand picked, crushed and gently pressed to maximise the flavour. The fermentation was maintained at a relatively low temperature so that the fruit characters were maintained and then left on yeast lees, for four months, so that the yeast cells start to break down and add flavour and palate texture to the final wine. Once fermentation was finished, the wine was left in tank until being prepared for bottling in February 2006.
Overall style: A subtle dessert wine that is not too sweet and cloying so goes very well with cheeses and fresh fruit.
Grape Clones: Mass Selection on two different rootstocks
Tastes/Aromas: A great array of honey, citrus and floral Riesling characters abound, giving this wine instant appeal. The palate is soft and morish without being too sweet. Moderate acidity gives the wine excellent length.
